Terracotta: Tradition and Contemporary Practice in India
Terracotta, derived from the Italian word meaning "buked earth." is one of the oldest forms of art in the world, deeply routed in the soil of India. As a traditional medium, terracotta has long been associated with religious ritual, folk culture, and decorative art forms. The heritage of terracotta sculpture in India, especially in regions she Bengal dates back centuries, where artisans sculpted deities, decorative panels, and functional items from local clay. Today, Indian contemporary artists and students are reinvigorating this ancient art farm, blending traditional methods with modern, conceptual, and abstract sensibilities. This fusion of heritage with innovation creates a diverse and meaningful narrative around the evolving role of terracotta in Indian art.
